CANBERRA: Two objects possibly related to the search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 have been sighted by satellite in the remote southern Indian Ocean, Australian officials said Thursday, calling it the "best lead we have".Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the "new and credible information" had come to light nearly two weeks after the plane vanished en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew on board.

An Australian air force Orion was due over the area some 2,500 kilometres (1,550 miles) southwest of the western city of Perth imminently with three more long-range surveillance planes, including from the United States and New Zealand, to follow. A merchant ship was expected to arrive in the vicinity around 0700 GMT with Australian naval vessel HMAS Success, which is capable of retrieving the objects, some days away.

"The objects are relatively indistinct. The indication to me is of objects that are of a reasonable size and probably awash with water and bobbing up and down over the surface," said Australian Maritime Safety Authority official John Young. 

"The largest... was assessed as being 24 metres. There is another one that is smaller than that.

"This is a lead, it is probably the best lead we have right now," he added.

"But we need to get there, find them, see them, assess them, to know whether it's really meaningful or not."

In the vast and remote southern Indian Ocean, he cautioned that "they will be difficult to find", with poor visibility expected as the weather deteriorates.

Abbott warned against drawing any premature conclusions.

"We must keep in mind the task of locating these objects will be extremely difficult and it may turn out that they are not related to the search for flight MH370," Abbott told parliament.

Young said it was possible the objects were containers that had fallen off ships.

"There are many steps to happen before we get to that point (getting any single piece out of the water)," he added.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia said on Thursday that two objects spotted by a satellite in the Indian Ocean were a "credible lead" in the search for a missing Malaysia Airlines passengers jet, but need to be confirmed.

"We now have a credible lead," Acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein told reporters in his daily press conference.

This "requires us overnight to verify and corroborate it," Hishammuddin said, adding that the overall search and rescue effort for Flight 370 would continue in the meantime.

He said that Prime Minister Najib Razak received call at 10am from Australia and the AMSA which coordinate the search.

Hishammuddin said every effort is being made to locate the debris sighted on Australia's satellite.

Investigators believe that someone with detailed knowledge of both the Boeing 777-200ER and commercial aviation navigation switched off the plane's communications systems before diverting it thousands of miles off its scheduled course.

Exhaustive background checks of the passengers and crew aboard have yielded barely anything that might explain why.

The discovery of the floating objects was revealed by Abbott.

"The task of locating these objects will be extremely difficult and it may turn out they are not related to the search for MH370," he told parliament.

The dimensions of the objects given are consistent with at least one of them possibly being the major part of a 777-200ER wing, which is around 27 meters (89 feet) long, though Australian officials cautioned the first images were indistinct.

The relatively large size of the objects would suggest that, if they do come from the missing aircraft, it was largely intact when it went into the water.

If the plane had run out of fuel, it would not necessarily have plummeted but its behavior would have depended on whether there was someone in control and their intentions, pilots said.

Modern aircraft are designed to use the rush of wind to drive a small emergency turbine that keeps hydraulics and some electrical power running if the engines run out of fuel.

If the debris is from the plane, investigators would face a daunting task to retrieve the "black box" data and voice recorders needed to help understand what caused the disaster.

University of Western Australia Professor of Oceanography Charitha Pattiaratchi said that, based on currents in the area, if the debris is from the plane it probably would have entered the water around 300-400 km (180-250 miles) to the west.

The search area covered an ocean ridge known as Naturalist Plateau, a large sea shelf about 3,500 meters (9,800 feet) deep, Pattiaratchi said. The plateau is about 250 km (150 miles) wide by 400 km (250 miles) long, and the area around it is close to 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) deep. KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia announced on Monday night that Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH370, which disappeared on March 8 while travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, was lost in the southern Indian Ocean.

MAS informed families of the 239 passengers and crew members that the plane was assumed to have crashed with no survivors.

"Malaysia Airlines deeply regrets that we have to assume beyond any reasonable doubt that MH370 has been lost and that none of those on board survived,'' the airline said in a SMS message.

"We must now accept all evidence suggests the plane went down in the southern Indian Ocean,"

Shortly after, Prime Minister Najib Razak addressed a press briefing that was hastily scheduled.

"This evening I was briefed by representatives from the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB). They informed me that Inmarsat, the UK company that provided the satellite data which indicated the northern and southern corridors, has been performing further calculations on the data. Using a type of analysis never before used in an investigation of this sort, they have been able to shed more light on MH370’s flight path," he told reporters.

"Based on their new analysis, Inmarsat and the AAIB have concluded that MH370 flew along the southern corridor, and that its last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean, west of Perth.

"This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sites. Solat jenazah ghaib untuk penumpang MH370 tidak perlu pada masa ini, kata Majlis Fatwa

Mesyuarat Jawatankuasa Khas Majlis Fatwa Kebangsaan malam ini (25 Mac 2014) menetapkan pelaksanaan solat jenazah ghaib untuk penumpang dan anak kapal Penerbangan MH370 tidak perlu diadakan sekarang, kata pengerusinya Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Abd Shukor Husin.

Katanya anggota jawatankuasa sebulat suara bersetuju dan memutuskan bahawa kesemua anak kapal dan penumpang MH370 dikategorikan sebagai orang hilang (mahqud) dan dianggap sebagai orang yang telah meninggal dunia setelah usaha pencarian dibuat oleh pihak berkuasa.

Keputusan itu dibuat setelah berbincang dan meneliti pandangan ulama dan beberapa pakar dalam subjek berkenaan selepas muzakarah khas bersidang lebih dua jam mulai 6 petang tadi, katanya kepada pemberita selepas mesyuarat Jawatankuasa Khas Majlis Fatwa Kebangsaan di Putrajaya.

Jawatankuasa fatwa juga memutuskan bahawa pengesahan kematian perlu dilakukan dan ditentukan di Mahkamah Syariah memandangkan ia penting untuk membolehkan pembubaran perkahwinan, pembahagian harta dan lain-lain yang membabitkan waris si mati, katanya.

Sehubungan itu, katanya, solat jenazah ghaib tidak diperlukan lagi buat masa sekarang kerana pihak kerajaan masih berusaha mencari kotak hitam, mencari mayat mangsa sekiranya ada dan pelbagai perkara yang berkaitan.

Abd Shukor berkata sekiranya pasukan penyelamat menemui cebisan mayat yang tidak dikenali langsung, cebisan berkenaan wajib dikumpulkan dan dimandikan sama seperti pengurusan jenazah Islam kerana mayat berkenaan tidak dapat dikenal pasti sepenuhnya, kata Abd Shukor.

Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Najib Razak ketika membentangkan usul khas di Dewan Rakyat hari ini bagi menzahirkan rasa sedih, dukacita dan pilu terhadap tragedi malang yang menimpa pesawat berkenaan mengatakan bahawa Jawatankuasa Khas Majlis Fatwa Kebangsaan akan bersidang petang ini untuk menentukan tarikh dan waktu pelaksanaan solat jenazah ghaib bagi penumpang dan anak-anak kapal pesawat Malaysia Airlines MH370.

"Anggota jawatankuasa fatwa berpendapat bahawa orang Islam yang terkorban dalam tragedi MH370 sebagai mati syahid akhirat. Selain itu, solat hajat dan doa untuk pesawat MH370 yang hilang itu dibolehkan agar Allah SWT mempermudahkan pencarian pesawat tersebut," katanya.
